COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Broken Arrow Animal Rescue has moved into its new brick building in Bixby today to house up to 30 dogs and provide a calm space for traumatized pets and mom-and-puppy care. The rescue is making improvements (including building a fence for outdoor space) to support adoption events and volunteer work.  FOX 23
  • Oasis Fresh Market is distributing free lunches and dinners to children from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. today at its North Peoria Avenue location — a response to school closures from the winter storm.  FOX 23

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tulsa launched its first city-funded film incentive to attract movie and TV productions, offering rebates up to $50,000 for projects spending $100K to $5M and up to $75,000 for larger projects. Productions must film within 30 miles of City Hall and use local crew and vendors (applications open Feb. 1).  KTUL

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Black Wall Street Rally was nominated for USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards and will hold a press conference on Friday, Jan. 30 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Greenwood Eatery — 100 North Greenwood Avenue. Public voting opens Feb. 2 at 11:00 a.m. through Mar. 2.  FOX 23
  • The Tulsa Performing Arts Center stages Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, a live adaptation of the classic tale that reunites the original creative team (such as composer Alan Menken and lyricist Tim Rice) in downtown Tulsa. The performance is ongoing today.  FOX 23
  • Tulsa FMAC will launch the Film Incentive Program on Feb. 1 to provide a 5% rebate on productions spending between $100K and $5M within a 30-mile Tulsa zone—if local music, crew, vendors and office space are used. It aims to boost local industry jobs and visibility.  2 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tulsa County held a job fair on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at Central Park Hall (inside Expo Square) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., where county hiring teams met with job seekers for on-the-spot applications and to introduce long-term career paths in public safety, social services and administrative offices.  News On 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School districts in Broken Arrow and Owasso canceled classes last week because school buses could not safely navigate neighborhood roads. Broken Arrow did not offer distance learning while Owasso used online learning to continue instruction & protect students.  2 News

  • On Wednesday, Berryhill Fire Protection District held an informational meeting in Turley to discuss expanding its coverage area if a petition collects (450) landowner signatures, a move that would boost volunteer training and support a planned ambulance service without changing city boundaries.  News On 6
  • At its Jan. 28 meeting, Tulsa City Council approved a $2.8 million loan to spur construction of 80 downtown apartments at 3rd + Denver, including 13 affordable units for lower-income households, with Partner Tulsa set to manage the financing.  2 News

  • The Haven Detox (Oklahoma), a new addiction treatment center, will soon open in Tulsa to offer accessible recovery services. The center highlighted the importance of local treatment for those seeking help.  FOX 23
  • A Tulsa family seeking guidance in dementia care got help from Purview Life when a life care manager found that their grandmother was in the wrong facility. Purview Life’s team (nurses and social workers) helps families navigate care decisions and avoid costly mistakes.  FOX 23
  • The American Heart Association warns that cold weather may strain hearts in Tulsa and advises residents to pace physical activities like shoveling snow. Officials recommend staying warm and knowing CPR (a key emergency tool) to help reduce heart attack risks.  KTUL
