CULTURE NEWS

  • The Vernon A.M.E. Church in Greenwood District began its transformation into a cultural institution today at 10 a.m., with Lieutenant Governor Matt Pinnell and Mayor Monroe Nichols leading a groundbreaking ceremony that honors its legacy as the only Black-owned structure to survive the 1921 Race Massacre.  2 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tulsa Public Schools held an informational session yesterday to guide students and families through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  FOX 23
  • At Town and Country School in Tulsa, rescue therapy dog Sterling, adopted by tech administrator Kathy Roark, now helps students with anxiety and learning challenges after overcoming a tough start (she was once a breeding dog).  News On 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State senators and representatives sent a letter to Superintendent Lindel Fields today asking for an investigation into reports that teachers may have promoted walkouts at Tulsa-area schools, raising concerns over attendance law breaches and classroom disruptions.  FOX 23
  • Governor Kevin Stitt and federal officials announced that Oklahoma became the first state to join A Home for Every Child, a program to boost the licensed foster home-to-child ratio and lower foster care entries. The state will increase licensed foster homes to build on its recent successes.  FOX 23
  • Gov. Stitt raised concerns over multimillion-dollar settlements with Tyson Foods and Cargill meant to fund cleanup in the Illinois River Watershed. He warned that a recent summary judgment could risk the agreements and praised Oklahoma farmers for their advocacy.  KTUL
  • Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced Wednesday that over $25 million in settlements was reached with Tyson Foods and Cargill to fund environmental cleanup in the Illinois River Watershed; Tyson will pay $19 million and Cargill $6.5 million while agreeing to remove additional poultry waste.  KTUL

  • Jenks is seeing a new gated housing development near 131st Street and Harvard Avenue that city leaders say will add residents and business activity and increase traffic. Officials are reviewing proposals and planning improvements (including widening Elm Street) to support the growing community.  KTUL
