COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rock and Rescue is hosting a pet adoption event today at Central Park Hall at Expo Square from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with over 20 pet rescues showcasing an estimated 150 to 200 adoptable pets that are fully vaccinated and spayed/neutered. The event will also include vendors, pet education talks and a Kids Zone, and some rescues may waive adoption fees — part of a community effort to address pet overpopulation.  FOX 23

CRIME NEWS

  • A standoff at a Tulsa home ended early Friday when police took three people into custody—two wanted men facing a firearms charge and a felony warrant for aggravated assault—and a woman who refused to exit after officers used pepper balls and a K-9 unit during hours of negotiation.  News On 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, high school seniors from Tulsa Tech’s Biomedical Sciences elective at Union High School presented new medical ideas in an event inspired by Shark Tank as a capstone project for the Project Lead the Way curriculum and competed for scholarships from Youth Medical Mentorship. They showed how classroom learning can be used to solve health problems in people and animals — a program that prepares them for future careers.  FOX 23
  • Mizel Jewish Community Day School in Tulsa marks its 50th anniversary as fourth and fifth graders visit seniors at a nearby retirement center—sharing reading and singing activities that build close bonds. The school will host a fundraiser called Mizel is Solid Gold on May 4 to invite the community to learn more about its unique educational programs.  2 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • April was the wettest month on record for Tulsa and the state as Tulsa recorded 10.99 inches of rain while some areas reached over 17 inches — meteorologists noted that the heavy rainfall caused unexpected flooding across several communities.  News On 6
  • Tulsa Wave Park is closed this weekend for visitor safety due to forecast water releases from Keystone Lake that are expected to reach 35,000 cubic feet per second—a sharp increase that may raise water above park walkways. Staff closed entry points on Saturday morning and the River Parks Authority will continue to monitor the situation and may extend closures if heavy rains add to the high water levels.  FOX 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials at the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services said the agency cannot cover payroll for Wednesday, May 7 and is $23 million short for the rest of the fiscal year—lawmakers plan to hold an emergency vote to keep services running.  News On 6
  • Oklahoma veteran Steffen Crow testified before the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee about a federal suicide prevention grant—reaching over 5,000 veterans—and urged lawmakers to fix VA policies he said block care. He proposed a $1.5 million expansion plan to extend services and build a statewide peer support network.  News On 6
