COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local nonprofit is helping over 55,000 girls in Tulsa County get period supplies through Tulsa Period Pantry at more than 70 schools and programs—its support aims to ease period poverty. The organization said National Period Poverty Awareness Week beginning May 12 will raise awareness and encourage community action.  FOX 23
  • The Tulsa Farmer’s Market reopened its Wednesday market in Kendall Whittier on May 7 — giving local farmers a second chance to reach customers and offer fresh produce, meat, and flowers — and it will run from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. through August with SNAP benefits and a $20 match.  News On 6

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday at noon, Tulsa Fire crews rescued two construction workers swept downstream in the Arkansas River after their boat sank while they were placing equipment for a railroad project — both men wore life vests as the strong current pulled them away until help arrived.  KTUL
  • A Tulsa man said his car flipped into a ditch in a hit-and-run accident along 56th Street near Highway 75 on May 7th at 5:11 p.m.—three days after his father died—and he, his fiancée, and their two toddlers are thankful to be alive while now facing delays in reaching a funeral with no car.  News On 6

BUSINESS NEWS

  • DoorDash is assisting local restaurants affected by wildfires by offering $10,000 relief grants through its Restaurant Disaster Relief Fund—these grants cover costs like rent, utilities, or supplier expenses. Restaurant owners must apply by May 30 to receive funding.  FOX 23

CRIME NEWS

  • Today, Tulsa police warned that Medetomidine (a veterinary sedative) has been found in five lab samples mixed with Fentanyl, a dangerous trend since the sedative does not respond to Narcan.  2 News
  • Federal death row inmate John Hanson, convicted in 1999 for the kidnapping of Mary Bowles and her murder in Owasso, had his clemency request denied by a 3 to 2 vote Wednesday morning — his execution is scheduled for June 12.  KTUL

CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 7, the Tulsa Performing Arts Center hosted a free lunchtime concert as part of its Brown Bag It series—an event featuring the Tulsa Opera Filstrup Artists in the Westby Pavilion with free parking available in Lot 101.  News On 6

  • Two Tulsa Webster High students became the first from Tulsa Public Schools to earn state FFA degrees on May 7—marking a major milestone in local agricultural education—and they focused on classroom projects like land judging, entomology, and floriculture to overcome urban challenges.  News On 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Cherokee Nation is accepting applications for a program that gives Tribal Seniors a $100 prepaid card for local farmers' markets—applicants must be 55 or older and meet income guidelines, and the program is set to serve 5,000 elders before it closes on Sept. 1 or when funds run out.  News On 6
