COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tulsa's Route 66 Capital Cruise will attempt a Guinness World Record on May 30 with nearly 4,000 classic cars parading from Yale to Denver along Route 66. Organizers said vehicles from 1996 and older may register and volunteer at one of 16 party zones, with adjudication at Mother Road Market.  News On 6

CULTURE NEWS

  • P.J. Sosko’s Sandbox returns today at RSUTV with six writers sharing new script readings performed by local actors. The free event (formerly held at Circle Cinema) gives audiences a look behind the scenes and requires pre-registration.  News On 6
  • Tulsa Shakespeare Company reimagines The Tempest with a Route 66 twist—mixing glitter, drag performance, and family themes. The production runs today through Saturday at Lynn Riggs Theatre inside the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center, with additional shows May 21–23 and pay-what-you-can tickets available on opening night.  News On 6
  • Tulsa JUMBO will return on May 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Studio 308 in East Village with a mix of improv, stand-up, and audience games (tickets cost $10 online, $15 at the door).  News On 6

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Federal data released Tuesday shows grocery prices rose 2.9% in April due to high fuel costs, extreme weather, and trade policies. Experts warn Tulsa shoppers may see further increases as production and shipping costs pass through soon.  2 News
  • Tulsa Uber driver Kevin Randell now drives 70 hours a week from the airport because rising gas prices and low per-mile fares force him to work longer than his previous 40-hour sales job (a shift that may prompt him to seek other opportunities).  News On 6
  • Sheffield Crossing, a $26 million shopping center on the former Sheffield Metal property, will host four major retailers (Ulta Beauty, Burlington Coat Factory, Ross, plus one pending tenant) in Sand Springs off Highway 97. The development will open softly in July and boost jobs and sales tax revenue.  News On 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oklahoma State University launched a statewide text messaging program today to send wheat farmers real-time updates on crop conditions and harvest progress as drought challenges crops. Farmers can join by texting WHEAT to (855-452-0489) and get quick expert answers.  News On 6
  • Circle Cinema will host its Keepin’ It: REEL Youth Film Camp from June 15-19 at TWHTV Studios in Webster High School for students aged 10 to 18. The weeklong camp offers hands-on filmmaking training and will end with a red carpet film premiere on July 18.  News On 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials said Tulsa’s 24/7 mental health clinician program in the 911 Center diverted over 6,600 calls from first responders in its first year — saving about $450,000 in public safety costs and easing dispatcher workloads.  FOX 23
  • On May 13, Tulsa reported that its 911 Center (24/7 mental health clinicians) diverted more than 6,600 calls from first responders in its first year, showing the city's effort to improve crisis support.  FOX 23
  • Karen Keith was chosen on Saturday as the new president of the Oklahoma Historical Society Board of Directors at the Oklahoma History Center — she has served on the board since 2011 and was Tulsa County Commissioner for District 2 before retiring in January 2025.  FOX 23
  • Bixby Fire partnered with Tulsa Fire in February to launch the C.A.R.E.S. program (Community Assistance Referrals and Educational Services) which reduces emergency call volumes by providing residents with long-term support. Eleven Bixby residents have enrolled so far, cutting emergency responses by 73%.  2 News
