Good morning, Tulsa. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 6th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Isabel Flores spoke with members of The SOIL Institute, a new nonprofit working to build a small supermarket in north Tulsa to offer access to fresh food from local farmers—its five planned projects will guide efforts over the next five years—and will end its own operations once its goals are met. Marketing president Elisa Chapa said the supermarket will remain under community control after the nonprofit completes its mission.  2 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Tulsa Fire Department responded to an overnight house fire at 11507 South Hudson Ave around 10:49 p.m.—neighbors reported the fire started on the home’s exterior and quickly spread to the attic while occupants escaped unharmed and investigators look into the nearby use of fireworks.  FOX 23
  • On July 5th a South Tulsa home near 111th Street and South Sheridan Avenue was heavily damaged by a late-night fire — all residents escaped safely as firefighters quickly responded and investigators now examine whether nearby fireworks caused the blaze.  News On 6

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Industry experts told 2 News that a shortage of key refrigerants could lead to much higher A/C repair costs this summer. Brandon Hill of Cool Enterprises said that the hard-to-find 454B may drive prices up four to five times — causing homeowners to pay hundreds or even thousands more if the wrong refrigerant is used.  2 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tulsa Public Schools is preparing for the new school year after new Oklahoma laws took effect Saturday, July 5th. The changes add one school day or six hours of class time, require a financial literacy course for high school students, and set stricter cell phone rules—TPS has already been following some of these rules and will adjust as needed.  News On 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The One Big Beautiful Bill passed recently and cuts SNAP by $230 billion while forcing states to cover 5% of costs, leaving food banks worried they will be overwhelmed. Local hunger relief agencies say nearly 1 in 5 Oklahomans face food insecurity and urge neighbors to help out—donations, volunteering, or checking on each other are needed.  KTUL
  • Sen. James Lankford warned Saturday about delays in the E-7 Wedgetail program at Tinker Air Force Base caused by issues with Boeing and risks from an overreliance on satellite controls—he stressed that improved oversight of SNAP is needed as states must lower Oklahoma's 10% error rate within two to three years or face higher costs. His remarks came during his appearance on News 9’s Hot Seat, where he also noted that current SNAP rules allow items like Flamin’ Hot Cheetos but not rotisserie chicken.  News On 6
