CRIME NEWS

  • Tulsa police say the 9 p.m. downtown curfew, which began in June, has reduced crowds and freed officers to handle other crimes citywide—police have issued 10 curfew tickets so far and downtown businesses report no loss in trade.  News On 6
  • Tulsa FMAC warns crew members of a scam offering false job opportunities that ask for bank information and require work before official hiring—anyone receiving suspicious messages should report them to Executive Director Meg Gould.  FOX 23
  • A Tulsa man sued the city after a police K9 bit him during a call in February when he reported nearby gunshots+ he spent four days in the hospital, faces over $65,000 in medical costs, suffers permanent injuries and anxiety, and seeks $175,000 in damages while police confirmed gunfire was reported in the area.  News On 6

  • On August 7th, Public Radio Tulsa hosted its third annual Adult Spelling Bee at Fulton Street Books—drawing more than a dozen participants and ending with Kean Kaufmann winning by spelling pneumatocyst correctly.  News On 6
  • Sarah's Oil tells the story of 11-year-old Sarah Rector—America's youngest Black millionaire—as she fights to keep her inherited land amid deceit in Oklahoma's oil fields; portions were filmed in Okmulgee and Bristow, and the film will hit theaters on Nov. 7.  News On 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • KIPP Tulsa Public Charter Schools is launching football and flag football programs for middle and high school students this school year to help them feel valued at school; girls will join flag football. Superintendent Donterrio Marzett said the schools increased enrollment, shifted the curriculum to focus on math and reading, and will use AI in classrooms to prepare students for college (all as part of a push to boost student engagement).  FOX 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oklahomans for Responsible Cannabis Action began collecting signatures on August 7 for a petition that needs 172,000 signatures by Nov. 3 to put a state question on the ballot for recreational marijuana legalization+if enough signatures are gathered, voters will decide on the issue next year.  News On 6
  • Early voting began yesterday in Oklahoma counties ahead of Aug.12 elections—voters could cast ballots at 8 a.m. on both Thursday and Friday. A key ballot item in Moore may result in a hotel tax increase.  News On 6
