COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Martha's Foundation in Tulsa has marked 15 years of support for teen and pregnant mothers with housing, life skills training and educational guidance. The organization will host a celebration at Rudisill Library on Saturday, August 16—raising funds for a permanent home.  News On 6
  • In July, Food On The Move served 879 Tulsa families by providing 1,343 hot meals and 15,023 pounds of fresh produce. The nonprofit will host three Community Food & Resource Festivals in August at Chamberlain Park, TCC Northeast and the Northwest Tulsa Hub to offer free groceries, hot meals and local services.  News On 6
  • A nationwide campaign was launched to provide housing for 111-year-old Tulsa Race Massacre survivor Mother Viola Ford Fletcher, who had never owned her own home. The campaign aimed to raise $1 million for a fully accessible residence that would offer 24/7 elder care—her grandson said it would help secure her legacy.  KTUL
  • Female firefighters from across Green Country released their eighth annual calendar and held a silent auction on August 14th—raising funds for pediatric cancer patients and programs supporting women in fire service. They will host a firefighter camp in Tahlequah in October—giving girls a chance to learn about a firefighting career.  News On 6

  • Two new businesses opened earlier this year in Jenks under one roof. Cajun Blackbird offers art workshops while The Mystic Pub hosts live music and serves crafted drinks — all in an old gas station at 601 E Main St where co-owner Amy Smith said the space mixes a laid-back beach feel with vintage art.  News On 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tulsa Public Schools is considering new rules that would change school branding deemed discriminatory to protected groups. A heat advisory is in effect today from noon to 8 p.m. as heat index values may reach 109 across eastern Oklahoma—residents are urged to limit outdoor activities and stay hydrated.  FOX 23
  • On Thursday, August 14th, more than a hundred Tulsa kids received backpacks and school supplies from North Tulsa Economic Development Initiative to get ready for the new school year. Parents and students met teachers, principals, scouts (and even Mayor Monroe Nichols) as they accessed extra support for families.  News On 6
  • Tulsa Public Schools will welcome over 34,000 students back on August 20 with expanded free meal programs, high-quality curriculum, and fewer teacher vacancies — superintendent Dr. Ebony Johnson said teachers and staff have prepared for months. She also invited community members to share input on district plans at a meeting on August 26.  News On 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Tulsa is urging residents to use its bulky waste pickup service for large household items and yard waste too big for regular bins. Residents must schedule the service at least three days before their regular refuse day and pay $10 per 8 cubic yards—accepted items include appliances, furniture, and limited electronics while hazardous materials are not allowed.  KTUL
  • The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority will spend $72 million to repair a bumpy section of Creek Turnpike known as the Roller Coaster Bridge by replacing 484 concrete beams and using $13.6 million to smooth the ride — OTA said bi-annual inspections confirm the bridge is safe for travel.  FOX 23
