COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Viola (Mother) Fletcher, the 111 year old survivor of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, is in hospital today without a stable home. A local project has raised nearly $4000 and aims to reach $5000 to help her secure safe housing.  KTUL

CRIME NEWS

  • A Tulsa woman in a wheelchair was struck by a car near 61st Street and Lewis Avenue on August 20th at 1:30 a.m.—she was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and the driver was arrested for outstanding warrants.  News On 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in Tulsa Public Schools returned to class today as the district uses new rules to fight chronic absenteeism—Superintendent Ebony Johnson said 44% of students missed over 10% of the school year, and families will soon meet with school officials to prevent loss of extracurricular activities. This effort aims to remove barriers like transportation and health issues that keep kids from learning.  KTUL
  • Tulsa, Sand Springs, and Claremore districts returned to class on August 20th as students began the new school year—Tulsa officials focused on addressing chronic absenteeism—while Claremore introduced a college readiness program and Sand Springs announced changes for the year.  2 News
  • Charles Page High School Assistant Principal Kristen Simpson spoke with FOX23 on the first day back to school today and said she is ready to welcome students for the new academic year — the interview took place in Tulsa under sunny skies.  FOX 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tulsa launched its first Office of Health and Well-being on August 20th to reduce health disparities and improve community care with more than $260,000 in funding from Community Care and a grant from George Kaiser Family Foundation. Mayor Monroe Nichols said the office—led by Dr. Jabraan Pasha—will coordinate health resources and work with local partners to guide future wellness efforts.  News On 6
  • On Wednesday, August 20th, Tulsa City Council approved a $6 million plan to pay one year's rent for 300 homeless people—half in shelters and half on the streets. The city will finalize contracts soon and offer finance classes, mental health support, and addiction services as part of a program scheduled to move participants into apartments over the next nine months.  News On 6
  • On Aug. 20, the Muscogee Creek Nation Supreme Court denied the Citizenship Board’s petition for a rehearing and upheld that Creek Freedmen and their descendants are entitled to equal rights under the 1866 treaty. Plaintiffs had filed the petition on Aug. 8, and the decision marks a significant step toward unity among Creek citizens — a milestone for their community.  FOX 23
