COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jenks High School will honor 9/11 victims on Sept. 11 by having students and volunteers place 2,977 American flags in front of the school at 7:30 a.m.—a short program with speakers and plane flyovers will begin at 8:30 a.m.  KTUL
  • City Lights Village kicked off its $26.1 million campaign last Tuesday in the Greenwood District to build a 75-home community for people leaving chronic homelessness—City Lights Foundation has raised over $19 million so far and needs $6.9 million more with the project set to open in summer.  KTUL
  • Tulsa will host Welcoming Week 2025 from Sept. 11 to Sept. 21 with a naturalization ceremony at City Hall on Sept. 11 and a kick-off event at the Gathering Place QuikTrip Great Lawn on Sept. 12—featuring cultural performances, a festive parade on Sept. 13, and additional activities that bring the community together. Organizers say the week will also include youth sports, educational workshops, and networking for internationally skilled immigrants.  KTUL

CRIME NEWS

  • On September 8 at 9:45 a.m., Tulsa police reported that suspect Keonta Walker, 33, accidentally shot himself in the head during a struggle with his alleged stalking victim at a check-cashing location on North Lewis Avenue—officers found him walking and took him into custody after the victim escaped safely.  KTUL

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 99th annual Tulsa Christmas Parade will be held on December 13 at 11 a.m.—its new theme Oklahome for Christmas honors the city's musical heritage. Teresa Knox serves as Grand Marshal and parade entries with sponsorship opportunities are now open.  KTUL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Residents in Tulsa and Rogers Counties have until 7 p.m. tonight to vote on a near $170 million bond that would fund a new tornado-safe 5th grade center, additional classrooms for grades 6–8 and a multi-use athletic facility at Owasso Public Schools—Superintendent Dr. Coates said the improvements will also allow Pre-K students to attend a full day.  FOX 23

  • Tulsa Zoo is celebrating a milestone in its elephant care program as keepers report that Billy and Tina have begun joining the established herd with Sooky and Sneezy—signs that the introductions are going well and help the zoo protect endangered Asian elephants.  KTUL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tulsa County Sheriff Vic Regalado said Operation SAFE gave homeless people the choice of treatment or jail+ he explained the plan aims to improve public safety while reducing jail crowding.  FOX 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Tulsa Health Department reported that COVID-19 tests in Tulsa County show a 12.9% positive rate as officials brace for a rise in respiratory illnesses this fall and winter—residents are urged to wash hands, cover coughs, and update COVID vaccinations.  News On 6

  • Union's winless team will try to break its streak in the 22nd annual Backyard Bowl on Friday the 12th at Allan Trimble Stadium with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.—running back K.D.
