  • Sixty-seven Oklahoma veterans who served in Vietnam and Korea are taking an all-expense-paid trip to visit Washington, D.C. memorials today with the Oklahoma Warriors Honor Flight—they will return to Tulsa at 9 p.m. for a community welcome.  News On 6
  • Camp Fierce is a hands-on firefighter camp for young women that will run October 10-12 at the Tahlequah Fire Department Training Center, where 41 participants will learn real firefighting techniques and leadership skills— the five-year program began in Tulsa and brings together experienced mentors from across Oklahoma.  News On 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in Union Public Schools’ Career Connect program and AAON are partnering to collect donated bikes and helmets from Oct. 13 to Nov. 14 to help local families in need. Interns will refurbish the bikes with guidance from technicians—continuing a project for the sixth year.  FOX 23
  • During the second week of the government shutdown, a Tulsa Community College teacher used the shutdown to show students how Congress works and how federal budget delays may affect programs like FAFSA. His lesson helped students learn that government actions—such as funding delays—can impact student aid.  News On 6
  • State Superintendent Lindel Fields has announced a 15-month education reform plan to address challenges in public schools such as student literacy, career pathways, and teacher recruitment. The plan begins on Thursday—when the State Board of Education will hold a special meeting to clear unresolved teacher certifications and pending student transfer requests—followed by a new budget proposal later this month.  FOX 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Tulsa Parks and Recreation Board presented a resolution on October 1 to return Council Oak Park and Stickball Park to the Muscogee Creek Nation, recognizing the parks’ historical ties and ensuring they remain open to everyone. A memorandum of understanding took effect on October 1 but the resolution awaits Tulsa City Council approval— a step that will shape the parks' future.  FOX 23

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Oklahoma Caring Vans are offering free flu shots to children across the state in October—nearly 4,000 vaccinations are expected for those aged six weeks to 18 years who are uninsured, Medicaid eligible or American Indian. Parents must bring current shot records and complete paperwork before their child is immunized on a first come, first served basis.  FOX 23
  • Jenks High School senior Jake Flowers overcame stage 4 cancer and now plays varsity football while sharing his story of survival—he wears a yellow ribbon on his helmet to raise childhood cancer awareness. He will mark 10 cancer-free years next spring and continues regular checkups to keep his health on track.  News On 6

  • Yesterday, the Tulsa Oilers began training camp at the WeStreet Ice Center as head coach Rob Murray said the team, with many new players, aimed for a deeper playoff run after last year's early exit. The team will play preseason games this week — with roster cuts on Sunday ahead of a regular season opener on October 24th.  News On 6
