  • Amid a state freeze warning, Tulsa shelters are asking for donations as the Tulsa Day Center, operating at 144 beds, sends teams to distribute blankets and winter gear—officials warn the unhoused face greater risk from the cold.  KTUL
  • The ongoing federal shutdown and pause on SNAP benefits are straining food access for Tulsa families—local outreach teams report that extra travel and long waits make meals harder to get. The Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma said a near 30% increase in need has forced it to use over $1 million from its reserves to support pantries.  FOX 23
  • The Tulsa Police Foundation and Tulsa Police Department launched Random Acts of Kindness Week on Monday by delivering boxes with diapers, wipes and pull-ups to Emergency Infant Services + distributing meal kits with recipes, gift cards and gas cards to help those in need.   • Sand Springs Animal Welfare is seeking information after puppies dumped in deplorable condition were found Wednesday in the Rolling Oaks neighborhood off West 41st Street between Prattville and Tulsa — the group asks anyone with footage or knowledge to call 918-246-2543.  FOX 23

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Langston University’s Department of Rehabilitation and Disability Studies has secured $3.125M in federal grants to expand disability studies programs and offer full-tuition scholarships for nearly 100 students over the next five years. The funding comes from three separate awards and will support new undergraduate and graduate tracks that prepare professionals to aid youth with mental, intellectual and developmental disabilities.  KTUL
  • The Tulsa City-County Library will debut its self-service kiosk at Tulsa Premium Outlets on November 23 at 2 p.m.—the kiosk will offer hundreds of books for 14-day rentals, accept returns at any library location, and provide free Wi-Fi during mall hours.  FOX 23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Tulsa in partnership with the Tulsa Metropolitan Utility Authority announced a temporary utility payment grace period through January 31 to help residents who are furloughed federal employees or rely on SNAP benefits amid the federal shutdown. Local organizations such as the Salvation Army and Tulsa Area United Way have reported a sharp rise in assistance calls to help families keep their utilities on and avoid financial hardship.  KTUL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tribal leaders and health experts urged Native communities to seek help as National Native American Heritage Month is observed; the AAIP and Sac and Fox Nation launched a campaign to promote the free 988 Lifeline—an all-day support service—for those facing stigma and mental health challenges.  KTUL
  • Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa will begin offering a new machine treatment later this month that uses sound waves to liquefy liver tumors without surgery (Edison System). Doctors say the technology from HistoSonics has been used on over 2,300 patients worldwide and provides a noninvasive option for those not suited for traditional surgery.  FOX 23

  • Tulsa's second annual Cold Turkey Mountain Bike Festival begins Friday at Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness, offering free nighttime festivities on Friday, skills clinics and a five stage Enduro Party on Saturday, plus XC races on Sunday. Participants must register, sign waivers and wear helmets—events may change if weather and trail conditions require adjustments.  FOX 23
