About this event
Friday, November 13 from 3–4:30 p.m. Helmerich Center for American Research
Join us for this month’s Works in Progress Seminar: Building on a chapter forthcoming in an edited collection from OU Press titled, “Oklahoma Women Lead the Way into The KKK,” Barnett wants to expand on women’s involvement in pre-WKKK organizations as well as later involvement in the Klan’s auxiliary. Placed within the Progressive Era context of women’s clubs and the urban notion of “social housekeeping/municipal housekeeping,” this project wants to explore reasons why both urban and rural women became active in civic issues facing them in their communities. Armed with the right to vote, Protestant evangelical white women could expand their sphere of influence and join with male Klansmen to serve as moral guardians for the community based upon principals they adapted from the emerging Social Gospel as advanced by Josiah Strong.
